best swimming goggles

Goggles that are made for swimming go all the way back to the 14th century. This is when Persian used highly polished tortoise shells to help them navigate murky water while they were diving for pearls. This technology would spread across Europe but wouldn’t be heavily used until the early 20th century. CJ Troppman patented the first official pair of goggles but it’s unknown whether he actually got to the point of actually manufacturing them.

Over the next few decades, swimmers would use various methods of covering their eyes while they were swimming. These included modified motorcycle goggles and homemade models. However, official one wouldn’t really begin to hit the market until the early 1970s. This is when modern swimming goggles officially hit the market and things haven’t been the same since.

Now, there are a variety of different models available. Which can make it difficult to determine which models are the best swimming goggles. And that’s why I’ve written this guide today. To allow you to navigate through all of the inferior models and choose the ones that are right for you. Choosing the Best Swimming Goggles

best swim gogglesBefore buying a pair of goggles for swimming, you should take a few things into consideration first. After all, there are different styles of glasses and different lenses to consider. So let’s take a look at some of these and this will help you find the best swim goggles possible.

When it comes to swimming goggles, there are basically three different types.

There are Competition Goggles, Practice Goggles and Recreational Goggles. Here’s the breakdown for these three types:

Competition

Competition ones usually have a low profile and fit very close to the eye socket. This positioning of the lens reduces drag as the swimmer moves through the water and makes him/her more hydrodynamic. These types of goggles are meant for racing and not for everyday use because they can become uncomfortable to wear.

Practice

Practice goggles are made for day-to-day use so they’re more comfortable to use but don’t have the advanced features Competition models have. They are usually made with slightly more gasket rubber that makes them not only more comfortable but also provide a good seal around your eyes.

Recreational

Recreational models are usually the cheapest ones available and they are made to be super comfortable. They may come with additional features that higher-grade goggles do but these features tend to be on the low end. For example, the UV protection or the anti-fog film that’s usually put on these goggles tend to wear off over time.

Now that we’ve covered some of the swim styles that are currently available for these types of glasses, now let’s take a look at some of the lenses that are used in them. For the most part, lenses can be broken down into three different categories: Metallic Lenses, Clear or Light Colored Lenses and Dark Colored Lenses. Let’s review these specific types of lenses.

Metallic

Also known as mirrored, these types of lenses are good for day-to-day use and for competition use—usually in an outdoor setting. These types of lenses aren’t very good for indoor or night swimming or for pools that aren’t properly lit.

Clear or Light Colored

Clear colored lenses are made for swimming indoors or in low-light conditions because they allow the maximum amount of light to reach your eyes. Light colored lenses each have their own characteristics that they lend to your swimming experience.

Lenses with a purple, green or pink hue usually brighten up the pool around you. Orange lenses also brighten up the pool for you and actually do a much better than the other light colored lenses. Just be sure to not wear these types of lenses in bright areas.

Dark Colored Lenses

If you need a pair of lenses which don’t provide a whole lot of UV protection but do block out some light, then dark colored ones might be the answer for you. While they aren’t designed for full sunlight, they are often used for swimming on cloudy day or for well-lit indoor pools. Just be careful while wearing these types of lenses because they don’t provide the UV-A and UV-B protection that other types of lenses do.
