A Guide To Chlorine Tablets

When you own a pool, you want to make sure that it’s as clean as possible. That’s a given. And one of the ways that a person can keep their swimming pool clean is by using chlorine tablets. These tablets do a wonderful job of killing viruses and bacteria that might have been lurking in the water otherwise. Most of the time it does this job extremely well, which is why it’s so often used for sanitizing pools. However, if the pool owner applies the product incorrectly, using too little or too much, they can have some significant problems.

Using too much chlorine can leave everyone’s eyes and skin red and irritated, and using too little chlorine can allow unwanted lifeforms to take hold in the pool. None of these are things that pool owners want to deal with, so we decided to write this guide to use chlorine tablets. In this guide, we’ll talk about how to figure out how many chlorine tablets should be used in a pool and how to add chlorine to a pool. We’re doing this because ultimately it doesn’t matter if your purchase the best chlorine tablets in the world, they’re not going to do the job that you want them to do if you use them incorrectly.

Choosing The Right Size Chlorine Tablets

Chlorine tablets come in two basic sizes: 1-inch tablets and 3-inch tablets. The size tablet that you’re going to need depends on the size of your pool. It can take up to twelve 1-inch tablets to disinfect 5,000 gallons of pool water, but it only takes one 3-inch chlorine tablet to treat the same amount of pool water. Therefore, in most cases, 3-inch tablets are what most pool owners are going to want to choose for their pool.

Calculating How Many Chlorine Tablets Your Pool Needs

To achieve the right chlorine concentration, you’re first going to need to figure out the dimensions of your pool. And in order to do measurements of your pool correctly, you are going to need to take your pool’s shape into consideration in order to know how you measure it to get volume. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular pool shapes and the formula for figuring out their volume.

Square and Rectangular Pools

For square and rectangular pools, you measure the length, width, and depth of the pool. You’ll then use the formula Length times Width times Average Depth times 7.5. While most people understand why length, width, and depth are multiplied together, some people are wondering right now why it’s all multiplied by 7.5. And the reason why we factor in this number is that 7.5 is the gallons of water in a cubic foot, so the formula will yield the number of gallons in the pool. For example, a 20×20 pool that’s 6-feet deep contains 18,000 gallons of water (20x20x6x7.5).

Circular Pools

Figuring out the amount of water in circular pools is a little bit different. The formula is 3.14 times the pool’s radius times the average depth x 7.5. Once again, the 7.5 is the number of gallons contained within a cubic foot of water. This formula can be pretty tricky considering that you have to square the radius of the pool—which means it’s multiplied with itself.

Therefore, if you have a pool that’s 24-feet in diameter, you’re first going to have to convert it to the radius. As we should all know from school, you do that by dividing it by two. That gives a 24-foot diameter pool a radius of 12-feet. And now let’s say that the average depth of this fictional pool is 4.5-feet deep. Okay, now we can plug those two numbers into our equation and find out how many gallons of water the pool contains. So, 3.14x12x4.5×7.5=1,271.7 gallons.

Irregularly Shaped Pools

Irregularly shaped pools can present the pool owner with a lot of frustration when it comes to trying to figure out the volume. Fortunately, that doesn’t have to be the case. The volume of an irregularly shaped pool can be obtained by breaking the pool into smaller square or rectangular areas and measuring the volume of each. When that’s done, all of the volumes can then be added together to come up with a total pool volume.

Methods Of Adding Chlorine To A Pool

Now that we understand the volume of our pools, and as a result, we know how much chlorine we need to add to them, it’s time to turn our attention to how to add those chlorine tablets. The one thing that a person isn’t going to want to do is to grab a handful of chlorine tablets and toss them into the pool. No, that would be the absolutely wrong thing to do. Remember, you can’t use chlorine tablets like granular chlorine. Instead, you’ll want to use one of the three different methods of adding chlorine tablets to a pool: Floating Chlorine Dispenser, Pool Skimmer, and the Automatic Chlorinator. Let’s look closely at each of the methods before this guide ends.

Floating Chlorine Dispenser

These dispensers are made out of plastic and simply float around the pool delivering the chlorine from the chlorine tablets that are contained within them. When using these dispensers, be careful they don’t get hung up and over dispense in one area. Dispensers aren’t usually a good idea for pools with liners either.

Pool Skimmer

The best method of adding chlorine tablets to a pool is through the skimmer. This is a great method, but the tablets can continue to dissolve when the filter isn’t running and this can create highly chlorinated water that could potentially damage equipment if not promptly dealt with.

Automatic Chlorinator

The last method of adding chlorine tablets to a pool is through an automatic chlorinator. These devices give the pool owner a great deal of control over their chlorination. All that has to be done is to add tablets, set it for chlorine levels from 1 part-per-million to 3 parts-per-million, and then let it go. As is the case with any method of adding chlorine, just be sure to regularly test the water to make sure chlorine levels are right.
